Tooth extraction may be recommended when a tooth cannot be restored or is affecting surrounding oral health. At Kelsey Park Dental in Beckenham, we assess the problem and discuss ways to retain the tooth where appropriate before considering removal. Our private emergency appointments provide an opportunity to understand your options, likely treatment and costs, without assuming that pain always means extraction.
When removal may be needed
Extensive decay, a deep tooth fracture or advanced periodontal disease can make a tooth difficult to save. An infected tooth may sometimes be retained with root canal treatment. Wisdom tooth problems may also need assessment. Pain or swelling alone does not establish the need for removal; the dentist examines the tooth and takes appropriate X-rays.
What happens at the appointment
We review your medical history, medications and any previous difficulties with dental treatment. Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area. You may feel pressure, but should tell the dentist if you feel pain so treatment can pause. Some teeth can be removed straightforwardly; more complex cases may require surgical treatment or referral. The dentist explains what is appropriate and obtains consent before proceeding.
Caring for the extraction site
Follow the specific aftercare instructions provided. Bite on gauze as directed to help a clot form, and avoid rinsing, spitting or disturbing the socket during the first 24 hours. Eat soft foods and wait until numbness has worn off before chewing. Avoid smoking and follow advice about exercise and alcohol. After 24 hours, gentle salt-water rinses may be recommended. Ask about pain relief that is suitable for your medical history.
Recovery and future care
Contact us if bleeding persists despite pressure, swelling increases or pain becomes worse after initially improving. Spreading facial swelling with breathing or swallowing difficulty needs emergency medical help. Attend any arranged review so healing can be checked. We can discuss replacement options, including a bridge, implant or denture where appropriate. If you already wear an appliance, advice on denture fit and repair may be relevant as your mouth changes during healing.
Private emergency appointments are £50; X-rays are £11 each. Additional treatment is charged separately. Call 020 8650 7677 or book an appointment online. Monday–Friday: 9 AM–5.45 PM; Saturday and Sunday: closed.
