Root Canal Treatment in Beckenham

Root canal treatment aims to retain a tooth when its pulp, containing nerves and blood vessels, becomes inflamed or infected. At Kelsey Park Dental in Beckenham, we assess dental pain and discuss whether root canal therapy is suitable. An emergency visit may start treatment or provide temporary care; completing treatment can require further appointments depending on the tooth and its condition.

Causes and symptoms

Deep decay, a cracked or broken tooth, trauma and leaking fillings can affect the pulp. Symptoms may include lingering sensitivity, severe toothache at night, tenderness on biting or discolouration. A small gum lump or dental abscess can occur, although some infected teeth cause little pain. Examination and appropriate X-rays help establish the diagnosis.

What root canal treatment involves

The dentist explains the procedure and uses local anaesthetic to make treatment more comfortable. The tooth is isolated, damaged pulp is removed and the root canals are cleaned and shaped. The canals are then filled and sealed. A temporary filling may be placed between visits. The number of appointments varies, and complex cases may need referral. Tell us about anxiety so we can discuss ways to support you.

Restoring the treated tooth

After root canal therapy, a suitable filling or crown protects the remaining tooth. Back teeth often need additional protection because chewing forces can cause fractures. Avoid biting hard foods on an unfinished restoration and attend all follow-up visits. If a temporary restoration comes away, arrange care for a lost filling promptly. Root canal treatment is not always suitable; removing the tooth may be an alternative when it cannot be restored.

Aftercare and prevention

Some tenderness can occur after treatment. Follow the dentist’s advice on pain relief, brushing and eating, and contact us if pain or swelling worsens rather than settles. Antibiotics are used only when clinically indicated and do not replace treating the infected tooth. Daily fluoride brushing, interdental cleaning and early treatment of decay help reduce future problems. Seek emergency medical help for swelling affecting breathing or swallowing.

Private emergency appointments are £50; X-rays are £11 each. Additional treatment is charged separately. Call 020 8650 7677 or book an appointment online. Monday–Friday: 9 AM–5.45 PM; Saturday and Sunday: closed.
