A cracked denture, broken base or loose denture tooth can make eating and speaking difficult. Wearing a damaged appliance may also irritate the gums. Kelsey Park Dental assesses broken dentures in Beckenham and discusses repair or replacement depending on the damage and fit. Contact the practice to arrange a private assessment; laboratory turnaround and repair suitability are confirmed after examination.
Why dentures break
Accidental drops, material wear, hard foods and uneven biting forces can damage dentures. Changes in the shape of the gums and jaw over time may make an appliance loose, increasing stress on its base. Repeated cracks can indicate a fit problem rather than simply weak material. Tell us how the break happened and whether the denture has been repaired before.
What to do with a broken denture
Collect all pieces and keep them in a safe container to bring to your visit. Do not use superglue, household adhesives or boiling water, and do not file sharp edges yourself. Stop wearing a denture that is cutting the mouth or feels unsafe. If you have a comfortable spare, it may help temporarily. Report sores, gum bleeding or persistent swelling so we can assess the tissues as well.
Repair and replacement options
The dentist examines the appliance and checks your mouth and bite. Suitable cracks or detached teeth may be repairable by a dental laboratory. A reline or adjustment may improve an appliance that has lost its fit. If a denture is badly damaged, worn or repeatedly breaking, a replacement may be more appropriate. Repair timing varies and same-day completion cannot be guaranteed. We explain proposed work, visits and fees before proceeding.
Keeping dentures comfortable
Handle dentures over a folded towel or basin of water to cushion drops. Clean daily with a soft brush and a suitable denture cleaner; avoid abrasive products and hot water. Follow advice for overnight removal and storage for your denture type. Clean your gums and any remaining teeth too. If a natural tooth develops pain beneath a partial denture, arrange a toothache assessment; after tooth removal, changes to the denture may be needed.
