If a dental crown falls out, the prepared tooth underneath may feel sensitive or unfamiliar. A loose crown can also trap food or move when you bite. Kelsey Park Dental provides private assessment for lost and loose crowns in Beckenham. Keep the crown and contact our team promptly; whether it can be refitted depends on its condition and the remaining tooth.
Why crowns become loose
Cement can deteriorate, while decay beneath a crown may change its fit. Sticky foods, grinding or trauma can also dislodge a restoration. Occasionally the tooth itself has fractured, requiring assessment for a broken tooth rather than simply replacing cement. A crown that repeatedly loosens should be examined for the underlying cause.
Protecting an exposed tooth
Place the crown in a clean container and bring it to the appointment. Avoid chewing on the exposed tooth and foods that trigger sensitivity. Continue gentle brushing to keep the area clean. Never use superglue, and do not force a crown back into place or sleep with a loose crown in your mouth. Contact us if you develop persistent dental pain or localised gum swelling. Difficulty breathing or swallowing requires emergency medical help.
Refitting or replacing a crown
The dentist checks the crown, supporting tooth and bite, taking X-rays if needed. An intact crown may be cleaned and re-cemented if the tooth is suitable. If decay or a fracture has compromised the tooth, it may need repair or a new crown. A temporary restoration can sometimes protect the area while a definitive replacement is arranged. Root canal treatment may be considered if the pulp is affected.
Reducing the risk of future crown loss
Clean along the gum line and between teeth daily to limit decay around crown edges. Avoid pulling on crowns with very sticky foods and discuss grinding if you notice wear or repeated breakages. Regular dental checks can identify changes in the fit before the crown comes away. Let the team know when the crown was fitted and whether it has loosened before.
